Abstract
Objectives: This study was performed to find the association between the obesity cognition and weight-related behaviors among primary school children and obesity of their parents.

Methods: The subject of this study was 1,308 primary school children in Gwangju. The data were collected using a physical examination data and questionnaire survey. Obesity was defined by obesity index cut-off points provided by the Korean Pediatric Society. The relationship between obesity of their parents and obesity cognition and weight-related behaviors among subjects were examined by chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis.

Results: The prevalence of obesity was 12.1% in male, 6.0% in female. When the body mass index (BMI) of both parents was within normal range, the prevalence of obesity was 9.1% in male, 4.5% in female, When one parent was obese, the prevalence was 17.7% in male, 9.4% in female, and when both parents were obese, the prevalence was 34.8% in male and 9.1% in female. In male children, cognition of body image and fear to get the weight were associated with obesity of parents. In female children, cognition of body image, fear to get the weight, and dissatisfaction of their body image were associated with it. The male children with obese parents did more exercise than them with non-obese parents, and the female children with obese parents did more worry about their weight than children with non-obese parents.

Conclusion: The childhood obesity cognition and weight-related behaviors were associated with obesity of the parents. To introduce the obesity management program to primary school children, it may be necessary to approach of the parents obesity.
